What is Tar and Chip?

A tar and chip driveway differs from a standard blacktop driveway in that it is made on site. The hot liquid asphalt and stone chips are actually applied simultaneously on the gravel base.

Pavement, a mixture of asphalt, sand, and gravel,on the other hand, is usually mixed at our off site plant. It is delivered, much like ready mixed concrete, to your house and applied with a special spreader. We provide three compacted layers of  Tar and Chip. That gives a nice thick coating and a surface that may last up to 17 to 25 years.

Noticeable features & Benefits

Natural Beauty: Tar & Chip provides a durable and beautifully rustic alternative to asphalt with the look and feel of a country road.

Maintenance Free: Unlike asphalt, Tar & Chip is self healing. When the base expands and contracts with temperature change, the three solid layers of Tar & Chip will do the same and not crack.

Improved Traction: The gritty surface of a Tar and Chip driveway provides fantastic traction in the winter or wet conditions. An excellent choice for steep slopes.

Cost effective: The cost of installation for Tar & Chip is less than half that of Asphalt.

Process:

1- Together we will outline the desired perimeter with spray paint so the border of your new driveway will be clearly defined.

2- Next we grade, lay and compact your base and remove asphalt if necessary.

3- We then chip the first layer, grade to perfection and compress.

4-Now it is time for the first application of hot tar (emulsion asphalt).

5- Once finished the tar, we are able to chip and compress the tiny stones into the liquid asphalt. Steps 3,4 and 5 are repeated and we then flatten the final grade.
